Washington Redskins Sign Thomas, Thompson’s Future Unclear

With Chris Thompson’s immediate future in question due to a shoulder injury, the Washington Redskins signed running back Pierre Thomas Friday afternoon.

To make room for the additional running back, defensive lineman Stephen Paea was placed on the season-ending Injured Reserve list with a toe injury. After setting a career-high in sacks with the Chicago Bears a year ago, he reached the quarterback for just 1.5 sacks in his first of four seasons with Washington.

Thomas was at Redskins Park on Friday and practiced with the team. The nine-year veteran stayed after to continue working before coming inside to talk to reporters. [Read more…]

Washington Nationals upgrading bullpen at Winter Meetings

In 2015, the Washington Nationals’ most glaring weakness was their bullpen.

To put it bluntly, former manager Matt Williams simply couldn’t rely on it, but he was often put in a bind when the starting pitcher faltered. No matter the situation, every game was in doubt when it was put on the arm of a relief pitcher.

So this offseason, beefing up the bullpen has been a focal point in general manager Mike Rizzo’s plan. And in the past 48 hours, he’s made good on his word, signing two relievers and executing a trade for another. [Read more…]

Washington Redskins Week 14 NFL Power Rankings Roundup

The Washington Redskins 19-16 loss on Monday Night Football at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys was ugly; there’s just no other way to put it.

Washington’s defense played well enough, but the special teams and offense both had nights worth forgetting. Now in a three-way tie for first place in the NFC East and their rivals now closer to the fight, the Redskins still control their own destiny, but it won’t easy as a majority of their remaining schedule is on the road.

Now 5-7, let’s take a look at where the Redskins stack up across the major media power rankings.

Washington Redskins Game 12: Dallas Cowboys — Five Takeaways

In a matter of minutes, the Washington Redskins went from having sole possession of the NFC East, to a three-way tie after losing the Dallas Cowboys on a last-minute field goal, 19-16.

Towards the end of the ESPN broadcast, Mike Tirico said something along the lines of “a good finish can mask an ugly game,” and that’s exactly what happened at FedExField on Monday night.

That we managed to see a combined 35 points in this game is nothing short of a miracle. For much of the first half, it seemed as though the first team to score would end up the victor. That assumption proved correct as Dallas did score first, but don’t let the box score fool you into thinking this was a contest of high execution.

It was ugly. It was nasty. If you like good football, then you hated this game. Along with that takeaway, here are five more following the Redskins 19-16 defeat at the hands of their rivals. [Read more…]

Washington Redskins Week 12 NFL Power Rankings Roundup

After a blowout loss at the hands of the undefeated Carolina Panthers, the Washington Redskins are now looking to rebound in a division race that they still aren’t out of.

Despite the a handful of blown calls by the officiating crew, I have a hard time not pinning this loss on the Redskins. As head coach Jay Gruden put it, when you lose by 28 points, there’s a much larger problem than a couple of blown. To say that the referees have it out for the team because of the name is shedding light on the wrong topic, and reopens a discussion that the franchise has been working hard to put away.

Washington Redskins Game 10: Carolina Panthers – Five Takeaways

Against undefeated teams this season, the Washington Redskins have not fared well.

In North Carolina to take on the now 10-0 Carolina Panthers, the Redskins fell well short of their own expectations, losing 44-16. Of their final total, 14 of those points came in an entertaining first quarter.

Washington started off well. They stuffed the Panthers’ on the game’s opening drive and the Redskins came out swinging on offense with Kirk Cousins finding Desean Jackson for a 56-yard touchdown pass. After Carolina answered on their next drive, Andre Roberts took the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a game-tying touchdown. [Read more…]

Washington Redskins Week 11 NFL Power Rankings Roundup

After a dominating win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon, the Washington Redskins have caught the eyes of those around the NFL national media.

That fact was ever so apparent in the latest power rankings. On most lists, they moved up. Some, surprisingly enough, have begun to look ahead at not just the remaining games on their regular season schedule, but also where they stand in the playoff race. Granted, the NFC East is an awful division, but Washington is only a half game back of first place.

Washington Redskins Game 9: New Orleans Saints – Five Takeaways

The Washington Redskins put together a masterful performance at FedExField on Sunday afternoon, defeating the New Orleans Saints, 47-14.

For as dysfunctional as this team has looked this season, they were anything but against one the NFL’s perennial powerhouses. From start to finish, Jay Gruden’s squad was in control and maintained their momentum throughout the game, finishing the Saints off with a strong fourth quarter.

Along with those, here are five more takeaways from the Redskins’ fourth home-win of the season. [Read more…]

Washington Redskins Week 10 Power Rankings Roundup

After taking a tough ‘L’ at the hands of the New England Patriots, the Washington Redskins didn’t do themselves any favors in their media perception.

Jay Gruden’s team took a hit in the weekly power rankings, and the national media also took it as an opportunity to locate the main problem with this team. There isn’t a consensus, but it does show that while the Redskins have looked strong at times this season, they are still a below-average team with plenty of room for improvement.

Washington Redskins Game 8: New England Patriots – Five Takeaways

The Washington Redskins flew up to Foxborough and put together a performance against the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots that has left me shaking my head.skins

In truth, the Redskins missed an opportunity to continue the momentum they built with their thrilling victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers prior to their Week 8 bye. The Patriots were playing down the Redskins level and Washington couldn’t even match the intensity and had far too much trouble executing. It makes one wonder what on earth were they up to over the long weekend?

Along with that question, here are five more takeaways from the Redskins 27-10 loss at the hands of the Patriots. [Read more…]
