Capitals place Backstrom on LTIR

The Washington Capitals officially placed center Nicklas Backstrom on the Long Term Injured List, ending his regular season.  The move frees up almost $7.6 million in salary under the cap, which might allow the Caps to make a significant move before today’s 3:00 pm NHL trade deadline.

We’ll be updating all day as the deadline approaches.
