The Washington Capitals players’ wives and girlfriends partnered with the wives of Washington Wizards’ coaching staff and Mystics’ players to go holiday shopping for twenty families adopted through the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Family-to-Family program at Target on Tuesday, Nov. 15.
Family-to-Family is an initiative that that provides holiday cheer to underserved and deserving families in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. This will be the third season the Capitals’ wives and girlfriends shop for the holidays, but this is the first time they have joined forces with the Washington Mystics and Wizards to participate in the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Family-to-Family program.
Carmen Brouwer, Kelley Halpern, Monika Hybnerova, Mackenzie Keeley, Megan Knuble, Lindsay MacDonald and Mandy Flemmer along with Patrice Cleary, wife of Wizards strength and conditioning coach, Debbie Saunders, wife of Wizards head coach and Wizards assistant coach, Ryan Saunders will all shop for 60 children and 25 adults.
Each shopper was responsible for a family and received a packet with a brief background including ages, sizes and a wish list. With a budget per person, the wives, girlfriends and staff each kept track of their purchases on a pad of paper and calculator.
It was harder than it looks, especially for those who do not have kids. A few of ladies sought advice from other shoppers. “Which toy would a seven year old boy like,?” and other similar questions. Some of the Capitals wives looked to Megan Knuble for advice since her and Mike have three kids.
Other were concerned about matching patterns and color coordinating as well as making sure to have the right fashion sense for each age.
The Capitals, Mystics and Wizards are planning to deliver presents to seven of the families and will host the other thirteen at an event to be determined.
Monumental Sports & Entertainment partner JK Moving Services will provide a truck to transport all of the purchases.
