The much-anticipated wax Alex Ovechkin was unveiled at Madame Tussauds Washington, DC on Monday, Oct. 24 after the postponement earlier in October due to the death of Ovechkin’s uncle. The Washington Capitals Captain faced-off against himself and posed with his new wax figure and asked the press, with a big grin, if they could tell who was the real Ovi.
The resemblance is uncanny.. What was Alex’s first comment about his wax twin? ”Its sick.” Alex was asked many times who was better looking and he decided that both were good-looking, but that the wax Ovi would have to have a scar added.
Alex Ovechkin joins Wayne Gretzky as one of only two hockey players ever to be immortalized in wax. Ovi donated a complete kit with Capitals uniform, pads, Bauer equipment and skates (with yellow laces, of course).
Ovechkin enjoyed participanting in the creation of his wax figure, spending hours with a team of Madame Tussauds studio artists, who joined him in Arlington, V.A. earlier this year to take more than 250 precise measurements and photographs — capturing him from every angle. The team of artists has been working since July to ensure the figure fully captures his unique style, exact eye color, build and overall allure, including his captivating smile (missing tooth and all). Ovi claimed the hair part as the most fun.
Alex called over to his father, Mikhail Ovechkin, to get a close up of the figure. He nodded and said a few things in Russian meaning he agreed that it looked like his talented son.
Children from the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club sported blacked-out-tooth smiles and joined both “Ovechkins” for a photo shoot.

The wax figure was in an unveiling area for debut, however, it will be moved to the “Sports” area right across from Babe Ruth.
In other news, Ovi was asked what he was going to be for Halloween. After a pause he said, “I think that me and Nicky are going to be Dumb and Dumber. You know, because we look like them.” It was a pretty entertaining moment and its easy to assume that Alex would be “Lloyd Christmas” (Jim Carrey) and Backstrom would be “Harry Dunne” (Jeff Daniels).
