ARLINGTON, VA-The Washington Capitals played their ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals, in a scrimmage this morning and beat them 8-0. The Caps had goals by Jay Beagle (2), Alex Ovechkin, John Carlson, Matt Hendricks, Marcus Johansson, Nicklas Backstrom & Wojtek Wolski.
The Caps used their same forward lines and defensively they had Alzner-Carlson & Hamrlik-Hillen paired up for only the first two periods. For the third period they had Alzner with Hillen and Carlson with Hamrlik. Schultz and Erskine were together for all three periods. Mike Green didn’t play with a cold, but Capitals Head Coach Adam Oates said Green would’ve been held out anyways, even if he didn’t have a cold.
Braden Holtby played the first thirty minutes and Michael Neuvirth played the last thirty, but both were playing goalie for the Reading Royals. Both gave up four goals a piece, but again, they were playing against the Caps players and with ECHL defenseman in front of them.
Brooks Laich skated before the scrimmage, but has yet to practice with the team.
One scary moment happened in the first period when Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson collided. Both players were fine and returned, Ovechkin though has a cut on his chin from Johansson’s helmet.
18-year-old Tom Wilson continues to get a lot of praise in the camp and Adam Oates is very impressed with what he’s seen.
“He looked great out there. Skated great. Looked like one of the guys. Sometimes I didn’t realize it was him.”
Also, after the scrimmage the Caps returned Cameron Schilling to AHL Hershey.
