Capitals Help Families of the Fallen Through TAPS
With 2011 Courage Caps Campaign

Courage Caps presented by SKYDEX Technologies raised more than $100,000 for charity

ARLINGTON, Va. – Washington Capitals team president Dick Patrick and SKYDEX Technologies president and CEO Mike Buchen presented Bonnie Carroll, president and founder of Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), with a check in the amount of $105,742.76 on Tuesday, Mar. 7, at Verizon Center as part of Caps Military Night. This money was raised through the Capitals Courage Caps program presented by SKYDEX Technologies, and raised more than double the 2010-11 campaign. The Capitals sold 2,464 Courage Caps and 1,923 Courage T-shirts during 2011-12 season.

“The great success of this year’s campaign has gratified and overwhelmed us all,” said Buchen, whose SKYDEX Technologies sponsored this season’s campaign. “There is no organization more deserving than TAPS and no better partner than the Washington Capitals. SKYDEX is proud to have been part of this effort.”

“We at TAPS are deeply grateful for the Capitals’ commitment to military families and for their energy in carrying out this year’s campaign”, said Carroll. “And we are grateful to SKYDEX Technologies for sponsoring the campaign and making this all possible. The proceeds from Courage Caps will be an enormous help in providing much-needed services to the survivors of our fallen military heroes.”

This year the Caps sold camouflage Courage Caps and T-shirts with camouflage Courage logos for $20 at Capitals home games, online at WashingtonCaps.com and at the Washington Capitals Team Store at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. For $50 fans were able to purchase Courage Caps or T-shirts signed by Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green, Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin or Tomas Vokoun; for $35, fans were able to purchase Courage Caps or T-shirts signed by any other individual Capitals player.

Washington Capitals Charities hosted 100 members of TAPS for a two-hour long skating party and pizza lunch at Kettler Capitals Iceplex with Caps forwards Jeff Halpern and Mike Knuble, on Nov. 7, 2011, to kick off the initiative.

Courage Caps is in its fifth season and has raised nearly $250,000, including a record number this season. The Washington Capitals have sold more than 8,000 Courage Caps in five years and more than 3,000 Courage T-shirts in three years.
