Maryland Basketball: Terps Land 4-Star SG Kevin Huerter

Kevin Huerter (6′ 5”-180) is the 12th ranked shooting guard in the nation and fourth best prospect out of the state of New York. He committed to Maryland today on Labor Day after a campus visit last Friday when the Maryland men’s soccer team upset #1 ranked UCLA.

According to 247sports, Huerter is the 64th best player in the country while ESPN ranks the sharp shooter at 41. The Terps beat out the likes of Michigan, Notre Dame, and Virginia for the rights to Huerter after being heavily recruited by assistant coach Dustin Clark.

Huerter joins local product PG Anthony Cowan as Terps 2016 recruiting class begins to gain traction. Even though Melo Trimble will likely declare for the NBA draft after this season, Maryland still has a lot of backcourt potential with the likely return of SG Dion Wiley and this year’s junior college transfer PG Jaylen Brantley.

After the news of Huerter’s commitment broke, fellow 4 star shooting guard Brandon Robinson canceled his official visit scheduled for next week. Robsinson, from Georgia, also has offers from Florida State, UNC, and Louisville. The next visit for the Terps will be next week when New Hampshire’s Wenyen Gabriel a five star power forward comes to town. Maryland will have the fight of their lives with the likes of Duke and Kentucky if they hope to land Gabriel.

Assuming Trimble, C Diamond Stone, and possibly PF Robert Carter Jr. declare for the NBA draft early with SF Jake Layman and transfer SG Rasheed Sulaimon graduating, the 2016 projected depth chart so far is:

  • PG: Jaylen Brantley, Anthony Cowan
  • SG: Dion Wiley, Kevin Huerter
  • SF: Jared Nickens
  • PF: Ivan Bender
  • C: Damonte Dodd, Michal Cekovsky

With all of the hype of ESPN’s #1 projected team in the country, the Maryland Terrapins are starting to build a power house for the future that has not graced College Park for over a decade. It is a great time to be a Terp!
