Maryland Football: Terps Reported to Fire Head Coach Randy Edsall Next Week

It is no surprise that many have been calling for fifth year Maryland coach, Randy Edsall‘s firing after embarrassing losses to West Virginia and disappointing performance at home against Bowling Green and Michigan. Now before the Terps travel to take on #1 Ohio State, Jeff Ermann is reporting the imminent firing of Edsall during next week’s bye.

The University of Maryland has released a statement that “Randy Edsall is our head football coach and he’ll be on the sidelines Saturday against Ohio State”. However, beyond this weekend (barring one of the biggest upsets in all of sports), Edsall may be out of College Park after a 2-4 start to the season.

In response to the report, Randy Edsall referred the media back to his comment he made on Tuesday:

“My whole focus and concern is working with our student-athletes and making them the best people, best students, and best athletes that we can. That’s all I’m worried about. I don’t read anything, see anything, and I’m just more worried about playing Ohio State.”

Edsall is a dismal 22-33 in over four seasons of work at Maryland and has yet to beat a ranked opponent. The past of removing ACC Freshman of the Year Danny O’Brien from the starting quarterback position early on in his tenure has seemed to be forgotten, but the handling of the current quarterback situation has doomed him.

Surprising as it may seem now, but Randy Edsall actually had his contract extended for three years in June, but because the firing would come before his original deal ends in January of 2017, Edsall will only see $500,000 of his $7.5 million extension.

Some of the only good news in this matter is that four star quarterback recruit, Dwayne Haskins, has reaffirmed his commitment to the University. Haskins has even kidded that the Terps new coach may be Chip Kelly when he arrives on campus next year, although the likelihood of such is extremely slim.

If offensive coordinator Mike Locksley does not get fired along with Edsall after this weeks game, he is a candidate to serve as the interim head coach while a thorough search takes place.

Stay calm Terps fans, Magic Maryland Madness, a sneak peak of the possibly #1 ranked Maryland basketball team, is a week from Saturday on October 17th.
