PHOTOS: Washington Capitals Practice, March 28
Dave and I are back in DC for a visit so we went over to Kettler Iceplex on Thursday, March 28 to watch the Washington Capitals practice. The last time we saw the Caps on the ice in person was in September before the lockout. We’re looking forward to seeing a few games at Verizon Center in the next couple of weeks!
There was a scary moment when Alex Ovechkin left the ice after catching a puck with his chin. He didn’t return to practice and tweeted photos from the doctor’s office before and after the 22 stitches. Ouch.
Here are a handful of photos from practice. It was great to take hockey photos again! As always, please feel free to comment on the post. I really appreciate feedback. Thanks.

Washington Nationals Spring Training Photo Gallery
Thanks to DistrictSportsPage.com fan contributor Wendy McDowell, here are some photos from Sunday’s chilly workout from Viera, FL. Most of the day players were bundled up underneath hooded sweatshirts, but most of the pitchers threw in the bullpen and there were some recognizable faces (and facial hair) floating about as well.
If you (or someone you know) is attending Nats spring training and would like to be a fan contributor for us this spring, please reach out to us at comments@districtsportspage.com. [Read more…]

2013 Washington Nationals NatsFest (with fan photos)
“We’re going to the World Series this year.” – Principal Owner Mark Lerner said during a “State of the Nationals” forum for season ticket holders at NatsFest.
The Washington Nationals held NatsFest on Saturday, January 26 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. By all accounts, it sounded like a big success with more than 7,000 fans (per @NationalsPR).
Fans got a chance to see new Nationals Denard Span and Dan Haren as well as several other Nats players and prospects, including Corey Brown, Tyler Clippard, Ian Desmond, Ross Detwiler, Danny Espinosa, Christian Garcia, Gio Gonzalez, Brian Goodwin, Bryce Harper, Nathan Karns, Steve Lombardozzi, Ryan Mattheus, Tyler Moore, Ryan Perry, Anthony Rendon, Will Rhymes, Matt Skole, Drew Storen, Kurt Suzuki, Chad Tracy, Jayson Werth and Jordan Zimmermann.

FORMER NATS: Nick Johnson Retires
Former Washington Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson filed his MLB retirement papers today at only age 34 according to several sources.
Nick Johnson was drafted by the New York Yankees in the third round of the 1996 amateur draft and made his major league debut on August 21, 2001 at only age 22. Johnson was traded by the Yankees to Montreal Expos with Randy Choate and Juan Rivera for Javier Vazquez.
Johnson joined the Nationals when the Expos moved to Washington in 2005 and #24 quickly became a fan favorite. In fact, there were still several Johnson jerseys worn at Nationals Park in 2012. Johnson was traded by the Nats to the then Florida Marlins after the all-star break in 2009 for Aaron Thompson.
Unfortunately, after the terrible collision in right field with outfielder Austin Kearns at Shea Stadium on Sept. 26, 2006 that left Johnson with a broken femur, Johnson could never quite get healthy again. After a half season with Marlins, Johnson bounced around from the Yankees to Indians and played last year with the Baltimore Orioles.
He only played 233 games in the big leagues after the 2006 injury, however, the guy could get on base. Since 2001, Nick Johnson has 10th best OBP (.399) among players with 3,000 plate appearances.
Some of the media poked fun of Johnson’s injury history and Sabremetricians hero.
Nick Johnson announced his retirement. In a related story, your health insurance premiums just went down.

Thanks for the memories, Nick Johnson.
We wish you all the best.
FORMER NATS: Michael Morse Returns to Seattle
Former Washington National and fan favorite, Michael Morse returned to Seattle for Mariners Fan Fest this weekend. We are only a few hours away from Seattle so made a last minute decision to drive over for fan fest when Morse was added to the schedule.
Morse signed autographs for 500 lucky fans on Saturday along with third baseman Kyle Seager and outfielder Michael Saunders. It was great to see the Beast settle back into his old stomping ground. Fans embraced him and welcomed him back with open arms.
One fan gave Morse a hard ticket from the 2005 game when Morse got his first MLB hit. A very nice gesture and Michael and his wife were very appreciative. We also saw a fan in line wearing a Nationals Morse jersey.
The trio were in a Q&A with fans later in the day and Morse was introduced to his signature tune, “Take On Me” by A-ha. It brought a smile to my face.
Seeing Morse’s smile (see photos below) was well worth the trip. We wish Morse the best of luck in Seattle!
