Relief pitcher Tyler Clippard seemed as surprised as Washington Nationals fans on Wednesday evening when the trade with the Oakland Athletics was announced. Nats fans immediately shared their displeasure of the trade on social media as Clippard is a fan favorite.

Shortly after the trade last night, Tyler Clippard took to Twitter to thank the fans. He even posted the “Peaches” video by The Presidents of the United States to long-time fans, which was Clippard’s warm-up song prior to “Ready or Not” by the Fugees (which I think was one of the best warm-up songs ever!).

See other DSP opinion pieces regarding the trade.

I’ve literally taken thousands of photos of Clippard over the years. It took some practice to get Clipp’s full unique delivery, which I nicknamed “Windmill” since both of his arms move around. Here are a few photos to view and reminisce. Wishing Clippard the best of luck with his new team, but he will definitely be missed in DC.

Blogging the Caps: Where did all the blogs go?

I’ve been blogging about the Washington Capitals since 2007, and the number of independent media and blogs that have covered the team since then has fluctuated wildly. The Caps were one of the first pro sports franchises to openly embrace new media, under former Media Relations Director Nate Ewell, inviting serious bloggers into the press box to cover the team alongside professional media.

Currently, the number of sites covering the Caps exclusively has dwindled to a very small fraction of what it once was. [Read more…]

Opening Day 2013 for the Potomac Nationals is Friday, April 5th at Pfitzner Stadium vs. the defending Carolina League Champion, Lynchburg Hillcats (Atlanta Braves) with first pitch at 7:05pm.

Washington partners with Activ8Social to create #CapsPowerPlay

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals announced today the launch of a comprehensive social loyalty program that will reward fans for engaging with the team via social media and at the Verizon Center.

The free #CapsPowerPlay program is the first of its kind in the National Hockey League and offers Caps fans an opportunity to win exclusive team prizes and experiences through a variety of social actions including checking into games on Foursquare, using team hashtags on Twitter and Instagram and sharing Caps content on Facebook.

“The Capitals have one of the most loyal and engaged fan bases in professional sports and we are excited to offer this unique opportunity for them to compete and showcase their passion,” said Joe Dupriest, chief marketing officer of Monumental Sports & Entertainment. “We are always seeking new ways to enhance the fan experience and reward fan loyalty and we think this is a great step forward.”

The #CapsPowerPlay rewards program was developed in partnership with Activ8Social using its proprietary FanScore platform that allows brands to identify, activate and reward their fans across social platforms.

“We’re very excited to have the Washington Capitals as a FanScore launch partner,” said Steve Cobb, partner and co-founder of Activ8Social, a creative digital agency that specializes in fan engagement and loyalty. “The Capitals have a reputation as being one of the more digitally savvy teams in professional sports and are always seeking innovative ways to give back and add value to their diehard fans. The #CapsPowerPlay rewards program is just another example of their willingness to find cool and unique ways to recognize and reward the best fans in the NHL.”

Caps fans can sign up for the rewards program by visiting WashingtonCaps.com/PowerPlay and connecting their Facebook or Twitter account. Fans have the ability to connect additional social media accounts for more opportunities to engage and earn points for prizes. Point-scoring actions across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare will be available at launch with additional actions being announced over the course of the season.
