Washington Capitals Game 47 Recap: Caps can’t hang with Blue Jackets, lose fourth straight

It felt like one step forward, two steps back for the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night as they played from behind all night long and fell to the Columbus Blue Jackets on the road, 4-3. Ill-timed penalties and a handful of defensive breakdowns spelled defeat for the Caps, as they dropped their fourth straight contest.

After a scoreless first, Mark Letestu opened the scoring for the Blue Jackets 3:45 into the second. A flurry of goals over the last five minutes of the period saw the teams trade goals, with All-Star Game MVP Ryan Johansen, Andre Burakovsky (7), Fedor Tyutin and Troy Brouwer (13) all getting a piece of the action, in that order. Cam Atkinson made things doubly hard for the Caps 5:20 into the final frame, and Evgeny Kuznetsov (5) pulled Washington back within one with 7:51 to go.

Unfortunately, that was as close as the Capitals got as Nick Backstrom took a bad hooking penalty at 17:15 to seal their fate.

Capitals notes

  • Tom Wilson didn’t have a great night, finishing with a minus-1 and four penalty minutes, including a boarding call just 2:38 into the contest that kind of set the (bad) tone for the Caps.
  • The Caps’ penalty kill was an impressive 5 for 5, holding Columbus’ top-five power play unit in check. But time killing penalties means time not spent playing offense.
  • On the flip side of that, Washington’s penalty kill was 0 for 3, generating just four shots on Curtis McElhinney.
  • Overall, the Capitals weren’t badly outshot, putting 28 shots on net to the Jackets’ 30.
  • That said, this might have been the Caps worst night this season in their own end. as Columbus got good look after good look on Braden Holtby. Brooks Orpik was on the ice for the first three Columbus goals and John Carlson might as well have been already back in DC prepping for Wednesday’s game.
  • Washington will have little time to recover from the loss, as they’ll hit the road right after for a game on Wednesday night at Pittsburgh at 8 p.m.
