Ovechkin to miss game in Philly

Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals captain and leading scorer, will miss Friday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers with an upper body injury, sustained Monday night in the 3-2 loss to Vancouver. Ovechkin skated in conditioning drills with John Erskine, on the LTIR, and team trainers Thursday in lieu of practice and will be held out at least one game.

The team did not disclose the exact nature of the injury, but head coach Adam Oates did confirm in his remarks to media following Thursday’s practice that Ovechkin sustained the injury when he was tripped in the first period on the play leading to the penalty shot, which Ovechkin missed.

With Ovechkin out, the lines were a bit jumbled during practice:

Erat-Backstrom-Fehr
Laich-Johansson-Brouwer
Chimera-Grabovski-Ward
Volpatti-Latta/Beagle-Wilson

Alzner-Carlson
