The Capitals and Rangers met during the 2011 Eastern Conference quarterfinals with the Capitals defeating the Rangers 4-1. Washington also eliminated the Rangers in seven games during the 2009 quarterfinals. Washington has won four of the six playoff series between the team teams and owns a 19-15 overall record against the Rangers in postseason play.

The Capitals defeated the Boston Bruins 2-1 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals last Wednesday night behind Joel Ward’s overtime goal at 2:57 of the first overtime. All seven games of the first-round series were decided by one goal margins, the first time in NHL history that every game of a seven-game series was decided by one goal.
