Saturday afternoon, the Washington Capitals released the date and opponent for their 2014-15 regular season home opener, the Montreal Canadiens on October 9. The meeting against the Canadiens will also be the Capitals’ first game of the season.
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals will host the Montreal Canadiens at Verizon Center on Oct. 9 in the team’s opening game of the 2014-15 season, the National Hockey League and Washington Capitals announced today.
The Capitals are 6-1-0 all-time in season openers at Verizon Center and will face Montreal in its opening game of the season for the first time in franchise history. Washington posted a 2-1-0 record against the Canadiens last season and are 36-30-9-1 all-time against Montreal at home. Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin registered four points (three goals, one assist) in three games against the Canadiens in 2013-14 and Braden Holtby posted a 2-0-0 record with one shutout, a 0.96 goals-against average and a .966 save percentage.
