Washington Nationals Game 43 Review: Hamels stellar, errors plague Nationals as Phillies win 8-1

A four-run third inning, featuring a two-run shot to center field by Maikel Franco, ended Stephen Strasburg’s day early and was the start of a painful day at Nationals Park, as a sellout crowd was on hand for an 8-1 Philadelphia win over the Nationals on Saturday.

Pulled by Manager Matt Williams after seven hits and five earned runs over just 3.2 innings, Strasburg took the loss, his fifth of the season, moving his record to 3-5. Ben Revere scored on a Chase Utley fielder’s choice to third, then Ryan Howard’s double to deep right scored Cesar Hernandez from third to make it 2-0. Strasburg nearly finished the inning without further damage, but Franco’s home run on an 0-2 pitch with two out made it 4-0.

A play featuring an error from both Ian Desmond and Wilson Ramos made it 6-0 in the fourth, an additional run that might have been prevented had Strasburg left the mound to back up home plate. Strasburg’s struggle was mercifully over after that, and A.J. Cole took his place.

“Of course [it concerns me],” Williams said. “That’s worked on more than anything else. And he’s got to be in position in case something does get away.”

Howard had a solo shot in the fifth, and Hernandez’ RBI double to right finished the Phillies’ scoring on the day. Desmond somewhat redeemed himself with an RBI double in the eighth that scored Michael Taylor.

HERO: Howard went 3-5 with two RBIs and scored twice.

GOAT: Strasburg’s ERA increased to 6.50, and his WHIP is now at 1.69.

  • Bryce Harper went an uncharacteristic 0-4 with two strikeouts.
  • Casey Janssen made his Nationals debut in the ninth, going 1-2-3 with seven strikes on eight pitches.
  • Washington went 0-5 with runners in scoring position.

NEXT UP: Gio Gonzalez (3-2, 4.94) takes on Aaron Harang (4-3, 1.82) in the rubber match of the series at 1:35 p.m. on Sunday at Nationals Park. The Nationals will be going for their eighth straight series win.
