Washington Nationals’ Lucas Giolito, Wilmer Difo Win End of Year Awards

On Thursday afternoon, the South Atlantic League announced its 2014 Annual All-Star Team, as well as league MVP, Most Outstanding Pitcher and Most Outstanding MLB Prospect. A pair of Hagerstown Suns, Lucas Giolito and Wilmer Difo, took home several of those awards.

Difo took home the league’s MVP Award and was also selected as the second baseman on the All-Star Team. At the mid-season point, he was also selected to the South Atlantic All-Star Team.

The following is an excerpt from a press release with a little more about Difo.

Difo is hitting .321 on the season (sixth best among those who qualify) and his slash line is .321/.366/.474. He ranks in the top five in the league in RBI with 88 (third), stolen bases with 49 (second), runs scored with 90 (tied for second), extra-base hits with 50 (fourth), and lowest total plate appearances/ strikeout ratio with a 9.55 average (fifth).

Giolito, who was shutdown after 98 innings as part of his recover from Tommy John surgery, took home Most Outstanding Pitcher and Most Outstanding MLB Prospect honors. A first-round pick of the Nationals in the 2012 MLB Draft, Giolito has made quite the recovering from elbow surgery. Twice this year Giolito took home pitcher of the week honors and also represented the organization in the MLB Futures Game at All-Star Weekend.

For a little more about Giolito’s season, check out the following:

Giolito went 10-2 with the Suns this season and had a 2.20 ERA in 20 games (all starts). Over 98.0 innings pitched he allowed 28 runs (24 earned) on 70 hits including seven homers. He walked 28 and struck out 110.

Along with Difo and Giolito, Rafael Bautista was named to the Annual All-Star Team’s outfield. Bautista bat a slash line of .283/.337/.373 with 66 stolen bases, a club record.
