MLB announced the rosters for the 2012 All-Star Game on Sunday, to be held at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City July 10. For the first time since their relocation, the Washington Nationals will have three representatives and perhaps a fourth.
Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez and Ian Desmond were all named to the team, while Bryce Harper was included in the final fan ballot.
Strasburg and Desmond make their first All-Star Games, Gonzalez his second as he represented the Oakland A’s last season.
In the final fan ballot, Harper goes up against the Braves’ Chipper Jones and Michael Bourn, Diamondbacks shortstop Aaron Hill and Cardinals third baseman David Freese, last year’s World Series MVP.
Strasburg and Gonzalez have battled all season for the N.L. lead in strikeouts. The two starters have combined to go 19-6 for the team with the best record in the league, both featuring ERAs under 3.00. Desmond leads N.L. shortstops in extra-base hits, is second in home runs (13) and leads in RBIs (43). Harper, the 19-year old rookie, is hitting .274/.347/.475 with eight home runs, 22 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 56 games.
