Series Notes

Expect pitching to rule the series. In terms of ranking, both teams have better pitching than they do hitting. Both squads have pitching staffs that rank in the top half of MLB in ERA, quality starts, WHIP and batting average against. Offensively, the Mets are in the bottom-third of the league in runs, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Likewise, the Nationals rank in the middle of the league in those same four categories.

Against the Mets this year, Washington is 5-1 and 10-1 going back to last September. The Nationals have already played New York at home once this year and went 2-1 in that series. The last time the Mets took a season series from Washington was 2009.

Denard Span continued his impressive offensive production against the Orioles. He’s now reached base safely in 30 straight games. Career against the Mets, he’s batting .333 with a .577 slugging percentage. In 111 at bats, he’s hit 11 doubles, two triples, four homers and 13 RBI.

Asdrubal Cabrera has been everything the Nationals hoped he would be. In four games since being trade to Washington, he has three hits, including one triple, an RBI and walk. Where he’s been his most impressive is defensively, where he’s made several web-gem plays at second base.

New York’s Game 3 starter, Jacob deGrom, is not a rookie the Nationals should take lightly. In July, he went 4-1 with a 1.39 ERA with 38 strikeouts and just seven walks. His impressive stat line earned him National League Rookie of the Month honors.
