Washington Redskins 2015 Schedule Analysis

April 21th, 2015 may easily go down in DC sports history as one of the most exciting and happy days ever for the city. First, the Washington Capitals tied their playoff series with the New York Islanders at two games apiece after a Nicklas Backstrom overtime goal. Then, the Washington Wizards dominated the Toronto Raptors to take a commanding 2-0 series lead before even returning home. Finally, the Washington Nationals walked off the St. Louis Cardinals with a Yunel Escobar home run in the bottom of the 10th. All of this transpired in a span of 15 minutes.

What will go into this day as a footnote in many DC sports fans minds was the release of the Washington Redskins schedule for the upcoming 2015 NFL season. If you were too caught up in the excitement of last night, we have you covered for what you need to know about the Redskins schedule outlook.

Quick Hitters

  • Season Opener: at home against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, September 13th at 1 PM.
  • Three nationally televised, prime time games (Week 3 at Giants on Thursday Night Football, Week 13 vs. Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and Week 16 at Eagles on Saturday Night Football).
  • Week 8 Bye prior to playing the Super Bowl champion Patriots in Foxborough.
  • Play NFC East, NFC South, AFC East, and NFC North/West cellar dwellers of last year (Bears and Rams).
  • Currently there are no late afternoon (4 PM) games, which is subject to change with flex options.

Interesting Facts and Stats

  • The Redskins only face one team with a winning record last year before their bye (Eagles).
  • Strength of Schedule: 0.479 with four games against playoff teams (Patriots, Panthers, and Cowboys twice).
  • Greg Hardy of the Cowboys received a 10-game suspension today, but will still face off against Trent Williams twice (Week 13 and 17).
  • The Redskins will face off against rookie head coaches Dan Quinn and Todd Bowles in back to back weeks (Week 6 and 7).
  • Four of the last six games are against NFC East foes meaning a chance to move up in the division or play spoiler.

The Washington Redskins have retooled their defense, have talented skill players on offense, and brought in a draft guru general manager. This has led many fans to have a small glimmer of hope of a repeat of the 2012 season when the Redskins went from worst to first.

With a relatively easy schedule to start out the season (0.384 SOS through first seven games) the Redskins have a chance to be competitive in the league early. If everything starts clicking perfectly the way this team has a chance to achieve, they could ride the momentum into December where they have a chance to play for a purpose.

It is too hard to know now, but the first domino leading up to the 2015 NFL season has fallen. Next up, the NFL draft which begins in almost a week.
