Washington Redskins docked cap space by NFL; release Otogwe and Sellers

The Washington Redskins Monday announced they released safety Oshiomogho Atogwe and fullback Mike Sellers.

Atogwe played just one season with the Redskins, signed as a free agent last summer. He played in 13 games with eight starts in 2011, finishing with 66 tackles (43 solo), three interceptions and 0.5 sacks.

Sellers played for the Redskins for 11 seasons. The fullback played in 164 games with 56 starts, compiling 158 rushing yards on 50 attempts and 1,022 receiving yards on 116 receptions and 19 total touchdowns. He also excelled on special teams, but found playing time limited this past season.

Sellers played in 12 games in 2011. He finished the season with one reception for 15 yards.

In other Redskins news, the team learned the NFL is docking the Skins $36 million in cap space in 2012 for front-loading contracts during the uncapped 2010 season. THe Dallas Cowboys will lose $10 in cap space.

The league issued a statement about the unprecedented event:

“The Management Council Executive Committee determined that the contract practices of a small number of clubs during the 2010 league year created an unacceptable risk to future competitive balance, particularly in light of the relatively modest salary cap growth projected for the new agreement’s early years. To remedy these effects and preserve competitive balance throughout the league, the parties to the CBA agreed to adjustments to team salary for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. These agreed-upon adjustments were structured in a manner that will not affect the salary cap or player spending on a league-wide basis.”
