Washington Redskins: Kirk Cousins Officially Named Starting QB for Week 1 and Beyond

Since being named the starter early in the offseason, drama surrounding Robert Griffin III has been mounting after two unimpressive preseason starts to start the year. After sustaining a concussion in the preseason home opener against the Lions, it seems that the Washington Redskins, mainly general manager Scot McCloughan and head coach Jay Gruden, are ready to move on in order to “change the culture”.

Griffin was unacceptably on poor behavior during his Thursday press conference last week when he said “I just work here” while thinking he would make the start in the dress rehearsal the following Saturday versus the Ravens. Little did he know that not only was did the neurologist go back on his verbal diagnosis, but today Gruden told the media that Kirk Cousins would have seen first team reps against Baltimore even if Griffin was cleared for action.

After initial reports from ESPN’s Dianna Russini, that Cousins would start week 1 for the Redskins under center, Jay Gruden officially confirmed that to the media following today’s morning practice in the bubble. The reason why Robert Griffin III might have played his last game as a Redskins is because Gruden announced that “it’s Kirk’s team” for the 2015 season regardless of when Griffin is cleared for game action.

According to Jay Gruden, “Kirk [Cousins] gives us [the Redskins] the best chance to win”. Cousins is 2-7 in his career as a starter, including 1-4 last season. The Michigan State product’s best season with the team, similarly to RG3, was also in his rookie year of 2012. Last year he played in 6 games, started in 5, coming through with 10 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, and a 46.9 QBR. The key for Cousins will be to have his touchdown turnover ratio to be much improved from his near 1:1 comparison that has been his track record.

In other news related to the Washington Redskins, Colt McCoy will play the entirety of the final preseason game against the Jaguars because of Griffin still not being cleared by Thursday and the idea that starters do not risk injuries so close to the start of the regular season. Though it is becoming clear the Redskins will not want to pick up RG3’s injury guaranteed fifth year contract for 2016 worth $16 million, for now Gruden told the media that he is still a Redskin implying that the former rookie of the year will not be traded or cut; however as me have constantly been reminded, things change.

Cousins gave Griffin a glowing review by announcing that “he remains classy, he works very, very hard, and I [Cousins] learn from that example”. It might be a tough pill to swallow for a player that has dropped as far as is possible from 2012, but Griffin must remain classy not only to possibly have another opportunity this year with the Redskins (barring multiple injuries or extremely poor performance), but more likely with other teams who may be looking for a quarterback.

WR Andre Roberts told the Post’s Mike Jones that he had no reaction to the quarterback change but is simply ready to roll with it. Moreover, the leader of the offense and recently paid Trent Williams said that it is his job to ensure locker room supports Gruden’s decision, but currently senses no division among the 75 players on the roster.
