Five Takeaways from the Washington Redskins’ 24-10 win over the St. Louis Rams

Here are five takeaways from the Redskins’ 24-10 win over St. Louis on Sunday at FedEx Field.

  • Clearly, the Skins are a first-half team.

They scored the game’s first 17 points, and led 17-0 at halftime. Combine that with their early lead last week, it shows pretty clearly that this will be the type of team going forward that is more productive in the first 2-3 quarters of a game.

  •  Kirk Cousins is the better of the three quarterbacks on the roster, for more than just his throwing ability.

Cousins was sacked twice today, upping his total on the season to all of … three. It’s important to note that the Rams’ front line is one of the best in the league, so after the sack troubles that plagued Robert Griffin last year, this is certainly welcome news for the Redskins offense.

  • There’s a very good place for Matt Jones on this team.

Jones was one of general manager Scot McCloughan’s savvy picks in the draft last spring, and had 123 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday. The backup to Alfred Morris, now the fifth-leading rusher in Redskins history, Jones led all rushers with 123 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.

  • That was one of the best team performances in some time.

From the running game opening up at the hands (feet?) of Jones, to the defense keeping the St. Louis offense in check, to a high-discipline effort (one fumble and no interceptions), one wonders if this may be a sign of things to come in the near future.

  • The division is wide open

I’m not suggesting that the Redskins are somehow going 12-4 or will even finish with a winning record, let alone win the division. But the Cowboys have two key injuries (Dez Bryant’s broken foot and Tony Romo’s broken collarbone), the Eagles’ offense is impotent through two games, and myriad questions exist with the Giants. It could very well be that the pundits’ preseason prediction of a 32nd-place finish for the Redskins ends up untrue.
