Report: Redskins sign tight end Alex Smith

The Redskins have signed tight end Alex Smith to a contract, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Smith, 33, played under Gruden in Tampa Bay from 2005-08 and Cincinnati in 2013, and has also played for the Eagles and Browns. In 121 career games, he has 1473 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on 163 catches.

Smith played in just two games last season for the Bengals, tearing his bicep in Week 2, and at 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, is more of a blocking tight end. Smith was with New Orleans during training camp, but was not retained. According to The Washington Post, Smith worked out for the team in Ashburn this morning, and head coach Jay Gruden said in his Monday press conference that he and general manager Scot McCloughan planned to bring in some tight ends this morning for workouts.

Terms of the deal were not immediately available.
