Washington Wizards Game 35 Review: Wiz send Knicks to team-record 13th straight loss

The Washington Wizards sent the New York Knicks to their team-record 13th straight loss, 101-91, Wednesday night at the Verizon Center in Washington.

“We are in control of what we think,” New York coach Derek Fisher said. “You guys can’t control that, the fans can’t control it. The other team can’t control it. We are in control of it. We can’t get caught up in the history and the records and the number of games. We come out and try to win one game and we are supposed to celebrate because we broke a streak, no. That’s not who we are going to be. We are where we are right now. We cannot change that… We came out tonight and controlled what we could control. These guys came out here and played as hard as they could against a really good team and we are going to get home safely, wake up and do it again tomorrow.”

The Wizards (24-11) seized the lead from the opening tip and never relinquished it. The outcome was never in doubt even though the Knicks trimmed the lead to five in the fourth quarter at 83-78.

The largest lead the Wizards had was 20 at 72-52. When Shane Larkin scored with 6:33 left in the game to cut the lead to five, Rasual Butler scored consecutive baskets to help stretch the lead back to 17.

“I think we got stagnant and didn’t move the ball or execute our game plan,” said Wizards guard John Wall. “We went into a drought when we didn’t make shots, but give those guys a lot of credit for not giving up. We have to learn to put teams away when we have leads like that.”

“Again, we just have to do a better job of closing those games out,”  said Washington head coach Randy Wittman. “As I told you guys before the game, these guys can play. They are players in the league. The record might not do it, but that is why you play these games.

That is why the league makes you play them and it is a situation if you sleep walk through it, you can look bad. And we slept walked after I think we got up 20. We just cannot take things for granted, and that is more a mental thing that we have to get better at, than a physical thing. It has got to be one of those things.”

Nene led the Wizards with 20 points, while Wall scored 18 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, dished out 8 assists and made 3 steals.

“I think we definitely dominated the inside game today with Nene and I think that’s the way we are supposed to play the next few games.  Obviously, we came out ready to play and want to bring that winning spirit to this house.  Obviously, coming off the road trip with those three losses we got to get some wins now,” said Wizards center Marcin Gortat.

Jose Calderon led the Knicks with 17 points. Cole Aldrich contributed 11 points.
